Initial Thoughts:
I already know that Mumbai India is a very populated city. I believe that it is one of the top five most populated cities in the world. Also, I know that there are many religions in Mumbai. A few that religions that I think are celebrated there are Hinduism and Buddhism. Also, I believe that Hinduism is one of the most celebrated or practiced religion in Mumbai. I know that Mumbai is bordering with the Arabian Sea or Indian Ocean. Living right next to the ocean most likely provides many jobs for people in Mumbai.

Markets:
Mumbai has more than 70 markets. Each market is filled with produce, shops, trinkets, clothing, jewelry, shoes, fabric, and more. The markets are usually very crowded, filled with street stalls and people inching through. Some markets include Bhuleshwar Wholesale Flower Market, Chor Bazaar otherwise known as Thieves' Market, Crawford Market, Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Market, and Zaveri Bazaar. Architecture: The architecture in Mumbai is a mix between modern and original styles. Buildings like Palais Royale, Mumbai's tallest building, and the Cybertecture Egg are very modern designs. While the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, and the Maharashtra police headquarters building all show very classic styles. Food: In Mumbai, food is usually very spicy. Two main foods eaten in Mumbai are rice and seafood. Rice is an easy crop to grow in Mumbai's climate and because Mumbai is right by the ocean, fishing is a common job. Religion also weighs heavily on diet. Vegetarian is widely practiced because of religion. Also, people practicing Hinduism consider cows to be sacred and will not eat beef. Fashion:
Fashion in Mumbai is full of bright colors and modernizing traditional looks. Woman traditionally wear a saree or a colorful pantsuit with a knee length shirt. Men usually wear western style suits or more traditional clothing. With both men and women style varies with religion and region. |
Religion:
Mumbai is full of many different religions and cultures. Some of the top practiced religions in Mumbai the main ones include Hinduism, Muslim, Christian, and Buddhism. While the Christian population is slowly shrinking in Mumbai, the amount of people celebrating Hinduism and Muslim is growing. Population: Mumbai is the sixth largest city in the world, with a population estimate of more than 21 million. It is expected that by 2030 the population in Mumbai will grow by seven million making it the fourth most populated city in the world. Mumbai also has one of the highest population density rates with over 30,000 people per square kilometer. Government: India's government is a democracy, divided into 29 states and 7 union territories. Although there is some corruption in certain areas in India, elections are usually free and fair. The voting age is eighteen and there is usually a 50% to 60% turnout in national elections. India contains the world's largest democracy. Festivals: Many of the festivals in Mumbai are religious. There are many different New Years, depending on the calendar you use. One of them is Baisakhi, marking the beginning of the Punjab region's harvest season. During this festival there are bright fairs where people dance, sing, enjoy acrobatic performances, and listen to music. One Hindu festival is Diwali, the festival of lights. It celebrates the triumph of light over darkness. This is the National Anthem of India, being performed by the Symphony Orchestra of India.

National Parks:
Mumbai is filled with wildlife and beauty. Although there aren't that many national parks, the few it does have are full of wildlife, attracting many tourists. The Sanjay Gandhi National Park was established in 1969, with 104 square kilometers of reserve. The park also arranged a tiger and lion safari which attracts around 2 million tourists every year. |
Reflection:
I learned that Mumbai is filled with strong culture and religion. Also, religion effects many different aspects of life in Mumbai, including food, fashion, architecture, festivals, and many other important traits. Without the vast variety of religion that Mumbai has, it wouldn't have such strong culture that it does now. I also learned that in Mumbai, people will celebrate festivals and holidays even if it is related to someone else's religion instead of theirs. Not only does religion shape lives, but it also unites different groups of people and builds communities.
