Human Environment Interaction
Initial Thoughts:
I think that the environment in Mumbai has helped people in many different ways. Being so close to the water has provided many job opportunities and easy ways to travel and import goods. Also, because of the tropical and wet weather it is most likely a good fertile environment to grow plants and food in. People living in Mumbai have had to adapt to adapt to the environment as well. Because of the warm weather people wear clothes made out of cotton and other thin materials that can breathe. Also, I believe that the people living in Mumbai effect the environment. Because there are so many people living in Mumbai, it most likely causes a lot of pollution, effecting their environment.

Effect on the Environment:
Mumbai is a highly populated city, one of the highest populations in the world. However, high populations, means pollution. Because of the large amount of people living in Mumbai, there are also many people using cars and other vehicles. Cars, trains, buses, and other auto mobiles all cause harmful gases to be released into the environment. Although many people in India commute, making the amount of harmful gases released into the air smaller, there are still a lot of vehicles on the road. Around 4,500 of the buses in Mumbai run on compressed natural gas instead of gasoline. The use of natural gas is helping the environment because it causes less pollution. Although Mumbai causes a lot of pollution, they find ways to minimize their effect on the environment. |
As the train travels, you can see the litter lining the tracks.

Environment's Effect:
The environment strongly effects life in Mumbai. Because pollution and smog levels are so high in Mumbai, breathing the air is likened to smoking 20 cigarette's a day. Not only are the people in Mumbai effecting the environment, but their effect is coming back and hurting them. The smog and pollution in the air is so bad in Mumbai that it actually is shortening lives. Also, the noise pollution in Mumbai causes hearing loss, hearing impairment, and heart attacks. 4% of heart attacks are caused by noise pollution. People are also effected by the pollution in the water. One out of every six glasses of water in Mumbai are contaminated, the city having a 16% water contamination rate. The location of Mumbai offers a natural recourse for food, the ocean. However, the ocean bordering Mumbai is filled with pollution. Because of this pollution, eating food fished from the ocean can be harmful to people. |
Reflection:
Mumbai's large population is hurting their environment and them. Because large numbers causes pollution, the city is not only harming the environment, but they are harming themselves, wildlife, neighboring cities, and visitors to the city. As the world grows, the amount of pollution is going to rise too. Mumbai has already started using eco-friendly buses to reduce the amount of pollution they create. They are looking for ways to reduce pollution and better the environment. |
