Movement
Initial Thoughts:
I believe that in Mumbai, for everyday uses, they travel using cars and bikes. When using travel for goods, resources, or long distances for people, I believe they use trains, boat, and airplanes to travel. Because Mumbai is so close to the ocean it would be very easy and efficient to use boats to import goods and resources. I believe that people in Mumbai emigrated to first world countries because they might be looking for more job opportunities. Also, because Mumbai is so populated people may have to emigrate to find a location with more space.

Public Transportation:
Public transportation in Mumbai is considered the best way of getting around the city. 80% of the city's commuters rely on public transportation to bring them to and from work every day. Trains are one form of public transportation. There is a monorail and a metro and many different lines for each railway. Trains hold several million commuters every day. They also get crowded very fast, with passengers standing in open doors, dangling out of windows, and even traveling on the roof. Mumbai has more than 4,500 busses, all running on compressed natural gas. Most people prefer to travel in taxi over bus though. With new private taxis that are safer and have air conditioning, they are the more comfortable option. In suburban locations you can also ride rickshaws, however they are restricted outside of urban locations. |
Personal Transportation:
For everyday transportation, people use cars, bikes, electric scooters, and motors cycles. Using personal vehicles is more difficult than using public transportation because of the slow moving traffic on the roads. However, even if you want to use personal transportation, luxury car prices have raised 110% in India. With these high prices, it distinguishes the rich from the poor. The people who own expensive cars, are going to be the people that can afford it, or the upper class. Then the lower class, who can't afford expensive cars, are going to be stuck with public transportation or buying a car that is not high-end. Immigrated and Emigrated: In Mumbai and India many people who emigrate out of the country leave because they can't find work. In 2007, a total of around 800,000 Indian citizens emigrated out of the country to find work. The top places people who are emigrating from Mumbai go are Gulf Countries, U.A.E., and Saudi Arabia. Another main cause of emigration is students leaving for school in different countries. People immigrating to India usually come for work or education related reasons. |
Goods and Recourses:
Because Mumbai is bordering the ocean, it is easy to import goods through boats. There are many ports or loading docks on the coast of Mumbai to move the incoming and outgoing products. The use of planes and trains are also common when moving products. Using cars and roads to transport goods is a time consuming process and rarely used because of the bad traffic in Mumbai. Rivers and canals offer another form of transportation of goods in India and Mumbai, however it is less common than using trains, planes, and the ports along the ocean. |
Reflection:
Mumbai is a very populated city. When commuting or traveling anywhere, traffic is slow and public transportation is over crowded. When purchasing vehicles for day to day use there is an unequal treatment of wealthy of poor. Importing goods and recourses is also very easy in Mumbai because it is right along the coast so goods can be shipped in by boat. There are also many railroads that can be used to move goods and recourses throughout the country.
